The Thanthai Periyar Library and Science Centre in Coimbatore is fast becoming one of the most ambitious projects in the field of public knowledge infrastructure in Tamil Nadu. The science centre has been conceptualized based on the ideals of Thanthai Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and aims to spread education, rationalism, scientific temper, and equality among all.

Vision and Location

The ₹300 crore project, developed by the Public Works Department, is situated near the Gandhipuram Town Bus Stand, on the site of the former Central Prison. The location of the science centre is such that it is easily accessible to students, researchers, and the general public from all over the city.

Infrastructure at a Glance

Stretched over an area of 6.98 acres, the seven-storied building covers an area of 1.98 lakh square feet, making it one of the largest integrated libraries and science centers in the state. The total investment includes ₹245 crores for the construction of the building, ₹50 crores for the purchase of books, and ₹5 crores for digital and technological infrastructure.

Advanced Library Facilities

The library will be designed to hold 1.2 lakh books of various disciplines, along with a comprehensive digital library system. Special reading areas, research areas, and reference areas will be provided to facilitate academic learning, competitive exam preparation, and research work. The library is expected to develop a strong reading habit in people of all age groups.

 

Interactive Science and Innovation Spaces

The Science Centre, spread over the ground and first floors, will house more than 90 interactive science exhibits that explain scientific concepts in an easily comprehensible manner. There will be a planetarium that provides an immersive experience in astronomy, and the seventh floor will house a future gallery that will highlight new and emerging areas of science like AI, robotics, and AR/VR.

Other facilities include an auditorium, incubation center, children’s learning spaces, and parking facilities, making it a one-stop destination for learning for the public.

 

Current Status and Timeline

As of December 2025, the project is about 80% completed. The interior finishing work, electrical installation, and setting up of science exhibits are in progress. The Science Centre is expected to be completed by January 15, 2026, and the inauguration ceremony will take place in early 2026.
